George Durgin

by George Durgin
(Punta Gorda, FL)

I am trying to get a friends Ridgeway Grandfather clock ticking again.

I have replaced the small spring that didn't look broken, and started the pendulum, but it only swings for a short time and stops.

Only when the pendulum swings a good distance will the hands move, than as it slows the hand do not move.

What else can I do?

Hi George

Make sure that the clock is absolutely level using a spirit level. Use wedges to correct.
Adjust the weight on the pendulum until the clock is ticking.

And of course wind up the clock either with the key of if appropriate by moving the weights.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.
