Numbers falling off face of clock

by Diane

My husband went to wind our clock as he always does, (had it about 16 yrs).
All of a sudden the 1 fell off of the noon, then the 2 went, then the 1 and then the other 2.- 4 numbers!

We were quite shocked at this.

Then we bought some glue to put them back on and more fell off!
Fortunately, he managed to get the rest back up but now there are smudge marks on our face from such a delicate procedure.

We did not even know who could have helped us with this.
Is this a common problem with a clock at this age and if so any remedies suggestions as we are not sure this could happen with the rest of the numbers that have yet to fall off?

cheap glue

Had the same problem. cleaned the glue residue off the numbers and reinstalled them with scotch double back tape. (you will need to trim the tape to the contour of the numbers) that way no mess from the glue. some have been on there for years and nave not fallen off yet.
