WHO MADE THIS CLOCK?

by Stephen Redburn
(London England)

I am 6ft tall and the clock is about 7ft 6in

I am 6ft tall and the clock is about 7ft 6in

This grandfather clock was in a Jewelers shop in East London from about 1900-1910 until about 1969 when it was closed by a road widening scheme.

My father bought it for about £1000 and then spent about £500 more on getting the bell tubes, pendulum and weights re plated.

At the time and again when we moved it to my house, it was handled by Thwaites and Reed the clock makers.

Recently they measured the accuracy at one hundredth of a second per hour after a move and a minor service.

However, neither this time or before have we found any sign of a maker's mark or serial number.

It must have been made by one of the top clock makers like JJ Elliott or Herschede but we have no idea which one.

Can anyone give a clue?
