Herschede Grandfather Clock
One of the great American clock manufacturers, Herschede grandfather clocks may not be as immediately recognized as those clocks by other manufacturers but they meet or surpass the quality levels of all of them.
Based out of Cincinnati, Ohio, Herschede produced a number of beautiful grandfather clocks that are still highly prized by collectors because of their amazing style and the precision of their clock movements.
Founded by an ambitious twenty-year-old watch- and clock-making apprentice in 1885, the Herschede clock company made its mark on the history of grandfather clocks like few other companies have ever managed to do.
Frank Herschede began his clock-making business simply, taking what he had learned as an apprentice and setting out to follow the American dream. Making floor clocks and jewelry, within 10 years his clocks had become popular enough that he was able to import clockwork movements from some of the best European manufacturers and had begun outsourcing the production of the clock cases themselves to a local cabinet maker that was able to meet his standards of excellence.
Where to Buy
As the popularity of Herschede floor clocks continued to grow, Herschede was eventually able to buy the cabinet shop that was making his cases so that they could focus on the production of clocks full-time.
Seeking to set Herschede clocks apart from other grandfather clocks and floor clocks that were available at the time, Frank Herschede looked to not only the movements and the custom clock cases to make a name for his clocks but also to the chimes that he used.
While most of the clocks that were available at the time made use of Winchester chimes, Herschede elected to offer the option of Canterbury chimes as well. The Canterbury chimes gave Herschede grandfather clocks a unique sound, allowing those who owned these clocks to take pride in the clock that they owned. Herschede grandfather clocks featuring authentic Canterbury chimes are still prized by clock collectors to this day even though the use of numerous variants of these chimes eventually became commonplace.
The Herschede clock company made a name for itself by producing high-quality work that also displayed quite a bit of innovation, and while these clocks aren’t as well-known today as they were in the early 19th century there are still a number of collectors and clock enthusiasts that take great pride in owning a Herschede clock.
These clocks stand as a great example of classic Ohio manufacturing as well as proof that the American dream of being able to pursue your life’s desire can come true provided that you’re willing to work at it.
