Sligh Grandfather clocks well made antique furniture




There are few grandfather clocks with as fine a reputation as Sligh. Sligh grandfather clocks, which have been purchased by Bulova, are well regarded as clocks that will last and keep accurate time.

While Bulova now owns Sligh, they continue to produce many of the same models that Sligh manufactured, and Bulova is also well regarded in the clock-making world.

Sligh grandfather clocks got their start as part of the furniture making venture of Charles Sligh.

Mr. Sligh had a small factory in Grand Rapids, MI, that made furniture and clocks. The company soon developed a reputation as a maker of quality goods.

Sligh floor clocks have long been regarded as keeping accurate time as well as having excellent cabinetry.

Reputation is important when purchasing a grandfather clock, which is one reason that Sligh is a good choice.

Grandfather clocks are, by their design, dependent on quality workmanship to keep accurate time. They are a type of pendant clock, which are sensitive to external movement.



The long case of the grandfather clock helps protect them somewhat from motion, but if the pendulum is jostled, the timekeeping will not be accurate.

The pendulum, which is responsible for keeping time, moves by weight.

The weight, inside the case, strikes the pendulum, forcing it to swing. Another weight inside the case hits the striking mechanism, which set off the chimes or bells.

Both of these weights are suspended, either by chains or cables. If your Sligh grandfather clocks strikes on the quarter hour, it will have a third weight inside that is responsible for this strike as well.

Grandfather clocks are typically wound once a week. There are two ways to wind the clock. If the weights inside of the casee are suspended by cables, you will wind the clock with a key, through a keyhole in the clock’s face.

If the weights of your grandfather clock are suspended by chains, you can wind it by using the chains to lift the weights up. They will go nearly as high as the clock face. Both a key mechanism and a chain driven one are accurate and reliable ways to keep time.

If you decide to purchase one of the Sligh clocks, or one of the newer models produced by Bulova, you can be confident that both names are famous for accurate time keeping.

Grandfather clocks by Sligh and Bulova will become a much treasured piece of furniture that you can pass down through your family for years to come.
